The term Carbon Neutrality (or Carbon Neutral) is, in reality, a stepping stone to be overcome by the Net-Zero ambition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The starting point: the concept of carbon neutrality<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carbon neutrality establishes a balance where carbon dioxide emissions (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) released are balanced by the amount removed or compensated for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Narrow focus:<\/strong> deals strictly with carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>), ignoring other potent Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) such as Methane (CH<sub>4<\/sub>) and Nitrous Oxide (N<sub>2<\/sub>O).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emphasis on compensation:<\/strong> Often, the balance is achieved through Carbon Credits, without there being an absolute commitment to reduce emissions from the operation itself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The norm:<\/strong> PAS 2060 is the benchmark for this concept, requiring companies to measure, reduce and offset emissions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leadership standard: the Net-Zero ambition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Net-Zero is the term endorsed by the IPCC and the International Energy Agency (IEA) as the standard needed to stabilize the climate. It requires a systemic transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Comprehensive scope:<\/strong> requires the reduction of all greenhouse gases (GHGs), in all Scopes (1, 2 and 3) of the value chain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Absolute priority on reduction: <\/strong>is a commitment to reduce emissions by 90% to 95% by the target date (usually 2050). If your strategy focuses only on buying credits without a reduction <em>real<\/em> footprint, your company becomes vulnerable to public and investor scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Net-Zero requires that simple compensation gives way to High Integrity Carbon Removal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The golden rule: reduction before removal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To achieve integrity, the top priority is decarbonization. Leading companies focus on transforming their operations, transportation and supply chains.
